SECTION 3: SOFTWARE I'VE USED WHEN MAKING THIS SITE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jing | Add visuals to your online conversations
[Free or Pro version] Used for screencasting and screen capture. Can upload the results direct to my site using FTP. The Pro version allows saving with MP4 and doesn't show the Jing Logos.
iSwiff - a Flash Player for Mac OS X
[Freeware] Allows the playback of SWF video files. The Developer also produces the excellent application called 'File Juicer'.
File Juicer - Extract images from PDF, PowerPoint, Word, Excel and other Files on Mac OS X
Extracts various media out of documents. I have found this very helpful when recovering documents I created in Windows and want to recreate on a Mac but don't want to redo all the screengrabs.
Tumblr
[Free] Where to go to start a tumblelog.
WordPress › Blog Tool and Publishing Platform
[Free] The current blogging tool of preference.
BannerZest
Simply and quickly, creates Flash animation slideshows from photos
ImageWell, the Fast & Lean Image Editor
A bit esoteric in its control method, but a very useful image editor. Can upload the results directly to my site using FTP.
Get Control of Your Website with ShutterBug
An alternative website creator. I prefer Sandvox. Made by the same person that does ImageWell.
Perian - The swiss-army knife of QuickTime® components
[Free / Donationware] Allows QuickTime to play all sorts of movie formats
Art Text - Mac software to create headings, web graphics, buttons and icons
By the very excellent BeLight software
Plain Clip 2
[Freeware / Donation] I have its icon on the Dock. I click the Dock icon to remove any formatting from text currently in the clipboard. I don't bother with the complex 'Launchers' option suggested on the site.
Needful Things: Applications - ThumbsUp
[Freeware] Scroll down the page to ThumbsUp. A very useful applications for making thumbnails and resizing images (same size or smaller). The 100% Sizing can be used to just convert the image format. I keep its icon in the Dock then just drag-and-drop images onto it. Made by the developers of DevonThink.
Integrity - website broken link checker
[Donationware] A simple to use application for check links used within the site and finding any that go to nowhere. The more you edit a site, the easier it is to create these broken links. Sandvox doesn't have a way to check links.
Pixelated Software: PixelStick
[Freeware] Measures the distance between pixels on screen. Useful for gauging the size available for a thumbnail picture for example. A bit fiddly to use.
LightWindow
[Donationware] With some Code Injection and Raw HTML fiddling, this can make images and external pages appear in front of the current page.
Taco Software - Taco HTML Edit for Mac OS X
I like the colour palette used for colour coding (syntax colouring) and the Live Preview option. A friendly HTML editor and PHP editor. It has a wizard for creating simple image maps. I find it more 'approachable' than Smultron for what I want to do.
Tuppis - Smultron by Peter Borg
[Free / Donationware] A versitile text editor for writing and coding that has syntax colouring and lots of features. The current version is OS X 10.5 Leopard only.
Panic - Coda - One-Window Web Development for Mac OS X
I have been happy with all the Panic software that I have bought. I have found this app to be very helpful. It allows me to edit HTML and CSS on the server, colours the code and does all the FTP moving, copying and deleting I need.
Panic - Transmit 3 - The next-generation Mac OS X FTP client!
This is the FTP client built into Coda. It has the advantage of a dual pane view that Coda doesn't seem to have.
plasq.com - Skitch - Snap, Draw, Share
Screen capture and image doodling / annotating application. Can upload the results directly to my site using FTP.
Ambrosia Software, Inc. -- utilities/snapzprox
There are cheaper alternatives for screengrabs and screencasts but there are certain types of screengrabs that I can only do with Snapz. I have rarely used the movies capture option in the most expensive version.
ForkLift - File manager and SFTP/FTP client for Mac OS X
I find that I am using this more than Transmit because I can use it to manage files on my harddrives as well as on my websites.
Add Interactive Image Maps To Your Web Site | RAGE MapDesign for Mac OS X
The application used to create the image map HTML
Firebug - Web Development Evolved
FireFox plug-in that shows the HTML and CSS of the page being shown in the browser.
