TextEdit - Used to Create a Text Graphic

textedit-text-graphic.png

A simple way to create a picture of text is to use TextEdit to create the text and a screen grabber to take a picture of the text on screen -->like this example created above. Adjust the font and page background colour from the Font Palette - Command+T.  Make sure TextEdit is working in Rich Text mode not Plain Text Format > Make Rich Text. If you only see Format > Make Plain Text, you are already in Rich Text mode.

I find this easier to do than work in a fancy art application.

Mac OS X has a built in screen capture utility call Grab. A list of it's keyboard shortcut can be found in (Apple) > System Preferences... > Hardware: Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts

For this example with Grab, I would press and hold Shift and Command then tap 4

A cross-hair with numbers appears on the screen. I usually click and drag the cross-hair from top left to bottom right of the area. On release of the left mouse button, the capture is made and saved as Picture {n} on the Desktop.

Hidden features of Grab:
Whilst dragging out the selected area, try pressing Shift
and/or Option [Alt on UK keyboards] or Space Bar. They modify the behaviour of the selection.

To capture a window or dialog box with Grab:
Hold down Command+Shift+4. The cross-hair cursor appears. Release the all the keys and tap the Spacebar. A small camera icon appears. Move this camera over the screen. What will be captured becomes highlighted. Left-click to capture the hightlighted item.

The screen capture utilities that I use are: [Snapz Pro X] and [Jing] and sometimes [Skitch].
